Benchmarking High Bandwidth-Delay Product Protocols

چکیده
TCP is the de facto transport protocol of the Internet, but its shortcomings in the large bandwidth and large latency networks is well documented. We create a set of benchmarks for protocols designed for the large bandwidth-delay product networks. By using the benchmarks to evaluate the leading protocols in network environments that vary in their bandwidth and latency, we found that each protocol far outperformed TCP, although each has its limitations. In the largest bandwidth-delay product environment we tested, PSockets achieved a maximum bandwidth of 875Mbps, while RBUDP and UDT were not far behind at 837Mbps and 840Mbps respectively, compared to 4.57Mbps for TCP. In achieving the high bandwidth, PSockets required user input to use 256 parallel sockets while RBUDP required predetermination of sending rate. UDT requires an orders of magnitude more data and time to achieve maximum bandwidth as compared to PSockets.

Impact of Drop Synchronisation on TCP Fairness in High Bandwidth-Delay Product Networks
In this paper we consider the performance of several well known high speed protocols in environments where individual flows experience different probabilities of seeing a drop in drop-tail buffers. Our initial results suggest the properties of networks in which these protocols are deployed can be sensitive to changes in these probabilities. Our results also suggest that AQMprotocol co-design ma...
متن کاملProtocols for high speed networks: life after ATM?
This presentation will provide a brief history of networking, and describe the current state of affairs and challenges as we attempt to deploy a broadband network infrastructure based on ATM and B-ISDN. Even if we solve all the hard problems associated with this, all we have provided is an integrated network infrastructure that is capable of transporting high bandwidth. We still have not solved...
متن کاملA Survey On Congestion Control Protocols For High Speed Networks
Conventional TCP suffers from poor performance on high bandwidth delay product links meant for supporting transmission rates of multi Gigabits per seconds (Gbps). This is largely due to TCP’s congestion control algorithm, which can be slow in taking advantage of large amounts of available bandwidth. A number of high-speed variants have been proposed recently, the major ones being BIC TCP, CUBIC...
متن کاملTransport Protocols for Large Bandwidth-Delay Product Networks - TCP Extensions and Alternative Transport Protocols
TCP’s poor performance is identified as the bottleneck of high-speed networks. Extensions to TCP have been proposed and implemented. Some authors abandon TCP at all and suggest new transport protocols to overcome TCP limitations, at the expense of compatibility. This paper reports a research on the most significant TCP extensions and transport alternatives, and comparison between them. The majo...
متن کامل2: Characteristics of Gigabit Networks
Advances in communication rates exceed the ability of a single source to fully utilize a gigabit WAN channel with existing deterministic protocols. Parallel communication describes a method for reducing latency by managing indeterminism and increasing channel utilization, given a surplus bandwidth-delay product. It involves a nondeterministic state mechanism, with a modified protocol interface....
